SUMMARY OF THOUGHTS: The Expendables 2 is everything its predecessor should have been, with more of a self-aware and cheesy sense about it and better direction by Simon West (taking over for Stallone). The film is silly, action-packed, and loaded with 80s star favorites. Perfect for guilty pleasure.
- Tyler Christian (Cali Critic):
One of those rare instances where the sequel vastly surpasses the likes of the original. The Expendables 2 is what the first one should’ve been in just about every way: non-stop violence, absurd, avoids taking itself too seriously, and embracing the extreme self-awareness. The mammoth ensemble on manliness serves their purpose on screen in hugely entertaining ways, even if their acting abilities have worn off. Director Simon West shows a great sense for action that I’m surprised he couldn’t express in his remake of The Mechanic, and he has full awareness of the kind of film he’s making throughout. If you’re a fan of almost all of these action legends on screen, don’t miss out or you may gradually lose sperm the more you wait. But when you finally get around to seeing it, I’m sure you’ll regain it back.
- Chad Gleason (MovieManCHAD):
Turn your brain off, grab a big tub of popcorn and a large drink and you’ll have a fun time watching this guilty pleasure. I did.
- Kevin Morrison (That Movie Nerd):
This is the perfect movie for the guy who can’t decide whether to watch Die Hard, Rambo or Terminator on a Friday night. If you are a fan of any of these stars and the old 80s action movies, this the movie for you. It’s loud, funny, and has a plot simple enough for you to enjoy what some may call “flaws” and others may call the best parts of the movie. Much improved on the first and, yes, Schwarzenegger and Willis get something to do in this one! If you aren’t a fan of this type of movie or want to see an award-winner, this ain’t for you. But if you are, saddle up man, these guys are back!
- Jake Peffer:
Great action, and it’s cool seeing all of these guys together in one movie. It really is a poorly made movie but it’s fun and entertaining which is all that matters here. Needed more Jet Li!
- Alex Perez:
Is it a masterpiece of cinema or anything close to that? Hell no. Is it at least an extremely fun summer action flick that far supersedes the original? Well you bet your ass it is! The Expendables 2 is everything that the first film should’ve been, and that’s thanks to great direction by Simon West, action scenes that are actually comprehensible, witty one-liners, a great cast, and a very high fun factor. If you’re an action movie fan, then please don’t miss out on The Expendables 2! It is FAR better than its predecessor, and you won’t regret seeing it!
The film we wanted the first one to be. This is The Avengers of action stars, but not just because they are in it, but because they work so well on screen together. From great action to hysterical laughter, it’s a must see.
